“Leaders at all levels influence work results by making the work itself meaningful.”
— Rob Goffee & Gareth Jones, Why Should Anyone Be Led by You?
Writing this piece wasn’t easy.
This quote from Goffee stirs too many thoughts and emotions.
We can all clearly say what kind of boss we dislike, but describing the kind we admire — that’s far harder.
🧭 What Makes a Good Leader?
In my leadership trainings, I ask participants:
“Describe a manager you want to work with.”
The answers always differ:
“Someone who understands and empathizes.”
“A boss who gets what we do and can discuss it technically.”
“Someone who solves client issues and negotiates bonuses.”
Clearly, everyone’s vision of a “good leader” is different.
So what should a manager do — adapt or stay firm?
There’s no easy answer.
⚖️ Two Kinds of Managers
1️⃣ Those who lead by instinct — just like their former bosses did.
2️⃣ Those who actively evolve, striving to be leaders, not just have the title.
Let’s talk about the second type — what it takes to stop managing and start leading.
💡 Why Real Leaders Are Rare
Leadership is everywhere — in MBA programs, books, and workshops.
Yet true leaders remain few.
Because leadership demands personal transformation.
And change is uncomfortable.
But the journey can start small — with understanding what real leaders actually do.
🌍 Leadership in a Changing World
Virginius Kundrotas, Dean of Adizes Graduate School, said:
“The key skill of the next decade is adaptability.”
The world changes fast — and no one can survive it alone.
The best model, he adds, is “democrature”:
use democracy to generate ideas, and dictatorship to implement them swiftly and decisively.
🤝 The Balanced Leader
Effective leaders know when to keep distance — to set direction, and when to stay close — to explain how things should be done.
They know their people: names, stories, dreams, fears.
And in return, they let others know their values and motives — why they make the decisions they do.
💬 Empathy. Openness. Adaptability.
“A true leader challenges organizational dogmas to boost productivity — even without certainty of victory.”
— Rob Goffee
Vulnerability doesn’t weaken a leader — it builds trust.
When people see authenticity, they respond with loyalty and engagement.
🧩 Three Core Leadership Skills
1️⃣ Observation & Analysis.
Good leaders sense their teams — they know when morale drops and how to lift it.
2️⃣ Adaptation.
They adjust not to the situation, but to people’s reactions — without losing identity.
3️⃣ Transformation.
The higher you rise, the harder it is to hear the truth.
“The more successful you are, the more people fear you — and the less honest they are,” said John Baumer.
Great leaders stay aware, grounded, and responsive.
🧠 Leadership Is a Journey, Not a Title
True leaders have no idols.
They test reality, stay authentic, and listen.
“When others try to put you on a pedestal, dig your feet firmly into the ground — because once up there, you stop hearing the truth.”
— Bill Burns
