Living in a VUCA World: 5 Dangerous Illusions About Change

May 28, 2024 By Olesia Ulianova

The modern world is often described with one simple — yet powerful — acronym: VUCA.
It stands for:

  • Volatility — rapid and unpredictable change,
  • Uncertainty — lack of clarity about what comes next,
  • Complexity — too many interconnected variables,
  • Ambiguity — multiple interpretations, no clear answers.

We live in a time when “certainty” has become the most expensive illusion of all. Yet, many professionals still cling to it — often unconsciously. Let’s look at five illusions that keep us stuck in the past.

  • Illusion #1: “Stable job” means safety

Experts today describe three complementary modes of thinking:
Run, Change, and Disrupt.

  • Run is routine — the day-to-day rhythm that keeps systems running.
  • Change is reflection — the ability to analyze what’s not working and adjust course.
  • Disrupt is reinvention — the radical reset when old models collapse.

Your career needs all three.
Run gives you structure.
Change keeps you growing.
Disrupt saves you when you’ve ignored the first two for too long.

💡 If you avoid “change,” disruption will find you anyway.

That’s why psychologists and talent strategists often say:

“Every 5 years, change your role — or the market will change it for you.”

  • Illusion #2: “Things will calm down soon”

They won’t.
Uncertainty isn’t a temporary crisis — it’s our permanent environment.
Waiting for “stability” wastes the one thing you can control — your energy.

Don’t freeze in endless analysis or overthinking questions like “Is this really for me?”
Instead, test small.
Join a free online course, attend a webinar, or explore a new field for a week.
Action is the antidote to uncertainty.

🚀 You can’t think your way into clarity — you can only act your way into it.

  • Illusion #3: “My dream life is somewhere else”

The fantasy of quitting everything to run a seaside café or work under palm trees is not about freedom — it’s about escape.
But you don’t need to flee your life to reinvent it.

Do a test drive of your dream.
Take a week off and simulate that “new life.”
Often, you’ll realize what you truly need isn’t geography — it’s energy, focus, or meaning.

🌴 Don’t chase a postcard version of happiness. Prototype it.

  • Illusion #4: “I can only be happy working for myself”

Not true.
There are unhappy freelancers, miserable startup founders, and burnt-out corporate employees — equally.
Freedom doesn’t come from where you work; it comes from how you work.

If you dream of starting something on your own — don’t burn bridges.
Use your current job as an incubator or runway.
Experiment, build small projects, test your idea while you still have stability.

🛫 Start small. Stay smart. Launch when ready.

  • Illusion #5: “I must overcome my fears first”

You won’t.
Fear never disappears — it just learns to walk beside you.
The goal isn’t to become fearless, but to move forward despite fear.

⚡ Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s the decision that something else matters more.

In essence:

In a VUCA world, growth belongs to those who run efficiently, change consciously, and disrupt intentionally.
The rest are left waiting for “normal” — a world that no longer exists.
